What is a track rod end?

Track rod ends are small, flexible ball joints inside your steering system that sit on the end of track rods. They connect them to the steering rack where the ends swivel to allow the steering rack to move the wheel more efficiently.

Is a track rod end an MOT failure?

Yes, if the track rod end has any excessive movement  or the boots are torn or corroded it will need replacing to pass an MOT.

How do I know if a track rod end needs replacing?

A sign that a track rod end needs replacing is when your steering feels unstable or if you feel vibrations through the steering wheel. One way of checking whether a replacement is needed is to try and move the rod by hand. If the ball joint is able to move in its socket it means that it needs replacing. Any mechanic will be able to advise if you track rod end needs replacing .
