What is a marker lamps/ Light?
Marker lights are exactly what they say, they are to mark the outside of the vehicle to show how long and wide a vehicle is
for the safety of other road users.
What is the UK law on marker lamps/ lights?
The current UK law on marker lights in respect of colour is a marker light fitted to the side must be orange/amber in colour.
Red if positioned at the rear of the vehicle (know as a rear position light) and white at the front (known as a front position light).
Is it illegal if your side marker lights aren't working?
Technically yes, however malfunctions happen and there are variables, so for instance your in a HGV (truck) you will have multiples
markers so if one was out the others would suffice until it was picked up on the 6 weekly inspections that HGV have.
As far as MOT's are concerned if any light on a vehicle isn't functioning it is a MOT failure and will need replacing/ repairing before passing.
