What is a hub Oil seal?

The hub seal prevents dirt and dust from entering the wheel bearings and wheel hub on your vehicle.

Why do hub Oil seals leak?

All wheel ends generate heat and when this occurs it will result in pressure in the wheel end,  "If this pressure has no way to vent through the hubcap vent or axle vent then the wheel seal is likely to start leaking due to the excessive amount of pressure. Each seal is also made of a rubber compound and over time will deteriorate because of age and also the heat aspect which can cause leakage.

Are there different types of hub seal?

Yes there are various types of hub seal, they vary in size, material and construction based on the vehicle requirements.

Is it safe to drive with a leaking hub seal?

The simple answer is no! if you suspect you have a leaking hub seal you need to get it replaced.

What material are hub oil seals made from?

The two main materials are:

NBR (Nitrile Butadiene Rubber) Most commonly used material for Bus, Car, Truck, Trailer applications- Tough and durable, Heat resistant

FKM/FPM (Fluoroelastomers synthetic polymer) Also known as viton again used mainly on Bus, Truck & Trailer applications- Is also tough and durable, but more heat resistant that the NBR material so better for vehicles operating at very high temperatures.

Which is best NBR or FPM?

Both tough, durable seals, but for durability/ lifespan at high temperatures the FPM seal is the best but generally will be more expensive.
